takayama snow bunnies are on high alert..

I was going to tell you the story of how we came to be in Japan for this most excellent of winter trips, but I’ll give you the.. ‘I’m back in Tokyo & only have 1 day left & want to squeeze in as much as I can’ version..

2005 – T&A plan trip to Fiji for a break – it was very nice – summer..

2005 – T&A agree that a winter holiday (winter destination) would be very nice indeed..

2006 – T realizes that A doesn’t really like the cold & therefore it was mostly T that was agreeing to the whole ‘winter destination’ thing..

*insert all travel since 2005 – travel destination season = summer*

2011 – winter in Japan.. (ps. woohoo!)

and can I just say, that (with the addition of 1x arctic rated goose down jacket w/ hoodie), I am very proud to say that Alyda has embraced the winter awesomeness with open arms)..

We wanted to get out of the city to see some of the ‘old’ Japan..   so we jumped onto an ultra sporty, hightech, 300km/hr speedy train (of course), & arrived in Takayama.. Such a lovely contrast – to walk around snow-covered streets at 6:30pm on a weekday in the centre of town, & not see any other humans.. *insert peaceful sigh here*

Also spent a little time in the very traditional looking village of Shirakawa-go.. The locals here still use old-school building techniques.. (straw-thatched roofs etc)..  Soooooo pretty.. Such a contrast to what we are familiar with.. We loved every second of it.. every second of the freeeeezing cold..  & I must add that I was very proud of my very tired D700 – soldiering on like a champion in -10 to -15 degrees C conditions without complaint..

Please…  enjoy your time in Japan.. domo arigato gozaimasu.. *bows*

Takayama day 1.. we'd been awake for exactly 4mins 52sec

my wife is so hot right now.. the snow melts around her as she walks, so the snow bunny behind her is on high alert!.. the locals called Alyda, 'Yuki ga tokete utsukushii josei', which means 'beautiful snow-melting lady'..

today's fire danger rating... 'low'

village of Shirakawa-go.. sooooo pretty & pretty cold..

brenda eden There is something haunting about these winter photos in Japan, especially the night ones. These are so beautiful! I went there years ago, to Sapporo. It was early May but there was still snow on the ground in places. Anyways, I just was jumping from blog to blog and came across yours. Your weddings are extremely beautiful!
