NZ mountain bike adventures.. (cuzzy-pro tour 2010)..

3 mates on a self-guided, week-long mountain bike tour in New Zealand’s south island.. BYO mountain bikes – check..  Winnebago style tour bus – check..  steel gonads – check..

So if life is about doing what you love.. then for me.. travel + mountain biking + photographing = ultimate meal deal.  I’d like to say that yes, we three are maximum extreme hardcore death-defying riders, but I for one have been concentrating more on my ninja powers..  Obviously there is some cross-over with skills but hey..

Dylan Phillips..  Adventurer, lover of all things mountain biking.. (See here for awesome adventures undertaken by him).  Jason Starr.. photographer, cycling & fitness addict.. (click here for some of his sweet eye-hole candy).  Todd McGaw..  photographer, lover of all things (except carrots).. click here for.. ok you’re here..

So after kicking ass for years on the trails around south-east Queensland & feeling like champions, we head across to south NZ in search of something more to conquer..   Let’s just say, we now have a ‘healthy respect’ for mother nature, & the mountain biking peeps of NZ.  We’re talking triple black diamond downhill trails in Queenstown listing trail notes as, and I quote, “professional level, all jumps 8 metres +”..  OK so this is hardcore.. Obviously we all have families & wanted to see them again, & so alas, no triple blackies for us..  BUT riding through Christchurch & Queenstown generally is aMAZing!! The community really supports mountain biking & a lot of planning & time has gone into trail design..  Last day of riding was heli-bike day! ie.. load bikes & boys onto helicopter, get dropped in the middle of nowhere mountains..  All day = 50km of down, 5km of up.. so to quote Mr Schwartzenegger.. GET TO THE CHOPPER!

I could go on all day about how awesome this trip was, but it’s easier for you to check some sweet pics taken by us..

smeagol finally takes a bath

this is the morning after dyl got covered in his own poo from a backfiring toilet! (should have watched the instructional video mr poomanchoo). listening to your friend dry-reaching while covered in his own filth in a sealed, mini phone-booth sized shower/toilet in a Winnebago?.. priceless :D

*insert witty 'what happens on tour stays on tour' comment*

heli-bike was an amazing experience.. carnage was zero except for 10 punctured tyres between the 3 of us.. D & J carried their bikes out with 2 flats by end of day.. this is Dyl after repair #3 methinks.

Pleased to report also, there was no life-changing injuries on this trip & no animals were harmed during filming..  Jason hurt his elbow after going over his handlebars while trying to ride across a bitumen road.  I crashed out on the first day of riding in Christchurch after hitting a tree & cut my leg..  Got a good look at my tibia bone before getting stitched up at hospital where all the nurses & doctors were riders as well.. It was high-fives all round rather than “your riding career is over dude”..  Got some extra-strong stitches – 1 day off  – then back on the bike! (gross-out injury pics from Jason’s iPhone here if you’re in the mood – otherwise move along nothing to see here)..  Dylan didn’t crash because he was.. a) too awesome, or..  b) not pushing the limits of awesomeness like Jason & me..  I think b) is the more likely..

peace out
