2011 QLD AIPP Wedding Photographer of the Year.. (it’s me)

I know I have been quiet of late, but believe me.. that will change..  I have sooo much to tell you..

Last weekend was the Queensland AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography), annual print awards… always a nerve-racking time.. “ahhhhh i’ve got nothing to enter”, “ahhhh I’ve left it too late!”, “ahhhh i’m not happy with my prints!”..  I’m sure (or I hope), every photographer goes through the same self doubt.. [ just me?]..

By entering these awards, you are putting yourself out there… open to scrutiny by experts in your field that you hold most high, so I wouldn’t say that entering these awards is easy, & to all the photographers that enter, i say ‘RESPEC!’ (especially if you’re entering for the first time), because you need some serious gumption to put yourself out there like that..

And, if you are getting married, (congratulations), & looking for a photographer.. Does an award winning photographer seem more appealing to you? or is the combo of, the quality of their images (in your eyes),  her/his personality, & the service they provide more important?..  personally, i think entering awards helps you to grow as an artist.. It makes you think about your work.. deconstruct it, & then rebuild.. it also thickens your skin when a print that you absolutely love/adore gets hammered by the judges, & boosts your confidence when your print causes big discussions among the judges (for and against), & scores well..  I also promise to post more wedding yumminess very soon for your lovely eyeballs..

So, while we were shooting a wedding last Sunday, during the wedding category judging, some of our peeps were texting updates with how my prints were going.. messages of excitement were coming my way but also news/speculation of other players that were doing well..  the scores were close.. very close.. so, I spent the next 36 hours convincing myself that I was definitely not a look-in for the wedding category ‘biggie’.. & by the time the QLD AIPP Gala dinner came on Monday night, I actually believed that I was not winning anything more than my 2 silver with distinctions, & 4 silver awards from my 8 prints entered.. and I was already absolutely stoked with that..

Needless to say, when they called ‘Todd Hunter McGaw‘ for the 2011 QLD AIPP WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR.. I was still stunned, shocked, & very emotional.. so emotional in fact that I almost didn’t make it through my ‘thank you’ speech.. It was a pretty awesome night & I probably should apologize to some people that, after introducing themselves to me,  I immediately hugged them.. I was very excited, sorry :)

party on wayne.. party on garth..

ummm.. the other thing is.. i can’t show you the images that i entered because the AIPP national print awards are coming up & I need to go into ‘secret squirrel’ mode until I decide what I’m entering.. So to compensate you lovely lovely people.. here’s a picture of a cat that i drew for you  :)

Another awesome thing is, that my very great friend Jonas Peterson came runner up to me for Wedding Photographer of the year (by 1 point), & also smashed it in by winning QLD AIPP Wedding Album of the year.. love you long time JP  :)    Also, I salute my excellent friends and mentors Richard Muldoon (runner up, Wedding Album of the Year), & John Reyment (runner up, Photographic Artist of the Year)..  A good night it was indeed :)
